WELCOME
* Tayla Haehae who joins Vicki Knell in Room 1. Tayla is in Year 8 and has a younger brother, Tai, in Room 7.
* Aimee Hawke who is a student teacher with Massey University. Aimee will be based in Room 3 with Dallas Townsend.

OPS QUIZ NIGHT
The Omokoroa Point School Quiz Nights are well known and well attended. The reputation they have gained over the years is a result of the team effort of a whole range of PTA members and other parents. Currently the PTA is looking for support for the up coming Quiz Night. There are a number of ways parents can help. Please give Andrea Penellum a call to see how you could help – Ph 5482266 or email barrea@orcon.net.nz

FIRST AID TRAINING
A refresher course for holders of a first aid certificate will now be held at Omokoroa Point School on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 September from 3 – 6 pm. School staff will be updating their certificates. Any parents who have first aid certificates that require updating, and are interested in attending these two sessions, should contact Hugh.

MATHS MADE EASY
Today flyers have been sent home for Maths Made Easy software. If wishing to order, please follow the instructions on the flyer and return to school.

CELEBRATIONS
* The high standard of speeches in the speech finals.
* The great response to the Food Bank and Daffodil Day appeals.

ZERO WASTE
Tomorrow the Zero Waste programme commences for Rooms 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7. Each class will have a lesson each day for the rest of the week.

ABSENCES
Thank you to parents who contact us when their child will be away from school. If you wish to text an absence, you may do so on 021 264 1621.

PAKISTAN
Parts of Pakistan have suffered from the worse flooding in living memory. With an estimated 20 million people directly impacted by the floods, there is a huge need for humanitarian aid. There are a number of ways you can support including donating using the World Vision website: www.WorldVision.org.nz  .

TAURANGA COMMUNITY FOODBANK APPEAL
The Annual Tauranga Foodbank Appeal was held last week. Thank you to everyone who contributed. If you were unable to send items to school last week, it is not too late to do so. There is a collection box in reception.

SAUSAGE SIZZLE
Year 7 & 8 students will continue with their regular fundraising activity selling Sausages for lunch on Friday.  Please complete the form in this newsletter and send it along to school with money by Friday morning.

SOUP FOR LUNCH
Students can order a cup of soup (with a bread roll) for $1.50 for lunch on Tuesdays & Thursdays.  Students are asked to bring their own mug if possible.  Soup is served in the schoolhouse kitchen.  Please complete the order form and return to school (with money) on the day you want soup.

OPS Senior Speech Contest
On Thursday 26 August our Year 5-8 finalists competed in the Library.  This year our judges were Mrs Smith – Principal of Tauriko School, Mrs Masson and Miss Culton.  Mrs Smith was particularly impressed with the overall standard of our speeches.  Congratulations to our finalists – places were awarded as follows:-

Year 5: 1st place Tayla Cole, 2nd place Drew de Wet, 3rd= Ariana Voyce & Kaya Tana
Year 6:  1st place Leah Godkin, 2nd Heather McKeown, 3rd Jasmine Rossiter.
Year 7: 1st place Andrew Devitt, 2nd place Grahame Woods, 3rd= Jana Hawkins & Duncan de Wet.
Year 8: 1st place Joshua Godkin, 2nd place Cameron Sycamore, 3rd place Poppy Coleman-West.

Final Placings in the Junior Poem Presentations:

QUIZ NIGHT
18th September at 7pm in the Settlers Hall. Tickets for this great event are now on sale. Get a team of 8 together and register with Heather in the school office. Tickets are $15 per person. If you don’t have a team, but would like to participate, leave your name with Heather and we will either make up a team or add you to a team that is short of a member. It will be a wonderful night of fun, food, drinks and prizes.

CUP CAKE DAY
Room 7 will be having cup cakes for sale again this Wednesday at morning interval. Cup cakes are $1 each and you can be sure there will be a huge range available.

ENVIRONMENTAL MESSAGE
It is a good time to get into the veggie garden.

URGENTLY REQUIRED!!!
The PTA is looking for donations of items suitable to be auctioned at the Quiz Night. In the past there have been: weekend bach accommodation, boat cruises, items signed by celebrities, catered meals, services, high value consumer goods ($100 +) etc. If you can help, or if you know of anyone else who could assist, please contact Andrea on 548 2266.

DAFFODIL DAY
A big ‘thank you’ to parents and students who supported the Daffodil Day Appeal. A total of $195.40 was raised. Congratulations to Room 2 who were the top class, raising $39.10.

YUMMY STICKERS
The Yummy sticker promotion runs for another 4 weeks. Collect Yummy stickers from apples and barcodes from apple bags. From now until 24 September, Royal Gala stickers/barcodes are worth double points. Get friends, neighbours, relatives and workmates to collect these for you as well. Collect them up and send them to school. Remember, apples are really good for us and should be a regular item in your child’s lunch box.

PTA RECIPE BOOK
The OPS PTA is intending to compile a recipe book as a fundraiser.  It would be great if every child submitted a favourite recipe to be included in the book.  Please hand recipes in to Heather at the school office or email Andrea at barrea@orcon.net.nz

HEALTH NOTE
Please keep checking your child’s head for head lice and get treatment if required.

ART CALENDARS
Order forms for the calendars are being sent home this week. Take this great opportunity to purchase a piece of your child’s art. They make great presents for grandparents, other family and friends.

SCHOOL PHOTOS
These are due to be taken on 22nd September.  PhotoLife has indicated they will not be giving students the opportunity to insert their photo if they happen to be absent on the day class photos are taken.
 
POLICIES
The following Policies are currently under review by the Board of Trustees. Parents are invited to make comment on these. These can be viewed at the School Office.
Appointments, Complaints Against School Employees, Complaints against the School in General, Dress Code (Staff), Dress Code (Students), Finance, Cycle Policy, Animals on School Grounds.
These policies will be ratified at the next B.O.T. meeting, unless there are any amendments to be made.

Parents are welcome to check out any school policies by calling into the school office. Policies are reviewed on a 3 year cycle.

SPORTS TEAMS + OTHER EVENTS – PHOTOS FOR SALE
Sports teams photos are now available to order.  Netball – Ice Angels, Korus; Hockey – Quickstix; Basketball – All Reds.
Prices –     8”x10” (20 x 28cm) $10 matte finish with names
        6”x4” $1 matt finish photo (no names)
Other photos are available to purchase including Dress Up Day, Wacky Hair Day and Ko Au photos.  Please see the list in the office or check out the school website for other photos.  These photos will be $1 for a
6”x4” matte finish.  Order forms are available at the office.  All orders must be returned with the money by Friday 3 September.  Any further queries please see Cushla.
